Inclusive Sports Programs for Individuals with Autism
Erasmus+ Sport – Project ref. 101182662
The general objective of Inclusive Sports Programs for Individuals with Autism (I.N.S.P.I.R.E.) is to promote the inclusion of young people with autism aged 13 to 20 in grassroots sports through the adoption of innovative approaches in sports contexts. According to various scientific studies on the impact of sports activities on people with autism, including those conducted by renowned authors such as Bremer, participation in sports represents an effective means to enhance motor, social, and communication skills in individuals with autism, thereby contributing to their social inclusion and overall improvement in quality of life.
According to the 2022 Eurobarometer on Sport, 45% of Europeans never engage in any sport or physical activity. Among the barriers to practicing sports, 14% of respondents cite disability, which clashes with sports environments not prepared to accommodate this type of user. The widespread lack of suitable sports facilities and personnel at the European level is also confirmed within the consortium countries, where, according to Eurobarometer 525, the percentage of individuals who do not practice sports due to a disability is 7% in Italy and 14% in Slovakia. Among the most discriminated target groups by age, the most at risk are young people of school age, that is, those between 13 and 20 years old.
